Description
Ash hardwood is a very durable North American hardwood. With great sadness this species of wood is slowly being decimated by the emerald ash borer. In essence, as these trees are attacked, they are slowly becoming extinct. This has already happened to other North American species such as the Chestnut tree.
Ash wood features a grain structure that is very similar to the oak families, and will often be used as a substitute by furniture manufactures as oak (with clever staining). Despite the similarities in grain structure, it is a much lighter wood, almost a white wood. The heartwood can have several different colors ranging from a light gray, light brown or light yellow shade. Ash flooring with its white color is highly complementary to black walnut with its deep rich dark browns. The durability of this wood is also very high so there should be little worry about wear or damage from high traffic areas or active families.
